Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM II Lens

The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM II is a Canon L-series zoom covering wide-angle to short-telephoto focal lengths and featuring a constant f/4 maximum aperture. The version II of this popular lens sports a redeveloped optical design, which includes four aspherical elements to significantly reduce distortion and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for great sharpness and accurate subject rendering. Individual elements feature an Air Sphere Coating, too, to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and colour accuracy in harsh lighting conditions.
Complementing the refined optics, this 24-105mm f/4 also sports a ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism to enable quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. A four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer is also used to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed and has a protective fluorine coating on the exposed elements for use in trying environmental conditions.
- EF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
- Aperture Range: f/4 to f/22
- Four Aspherical Elements
- Air Sphere and Fluorine Coatings
Standard wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 38.4-168mm equivalent focal length range.
For incredible versatility, the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM has been redesigned to deliver superb L-series optical performance that pairs smoothly with the high-resolution, full-frame sensors of SLR cameras. Featuring a zoom range of 24-105mm and a constant f/4 aperture, the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM is ideal for landscapes, portraits, sports and more, offering effective all-day performance for advanced photography and videography. It helps reduce ghosting and flare, and has improved peripheral brightness as well as a 10-blade circular aperture that helps deliver sharp, evenly illuminated images with gorgeous background blur. It even has an improved IS system for better handheld performance, especially in challenging light. From wide-angle to mid-telephoto and everywhere in-between, the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM is a durable, compact performer you can count on for excellent performance and gorgeous results in more places, more often.
All-new Optical Design with Improvements in Peripheral Brightness
The EF 24–105mm f4/L IS II USM’s new optical composition includes 17 elements in 12 groups, including 4 glass-moulded (GMo) aspherical lenses on 5 surfaces for excellent overall resolving power. These improvements help increase peripheral brightness for better edge-to-edge results with reduced distortions, delivering still photos and video of great clarity and resolution.
High-performance Standard Zoom Lens with Constant f/4 Aperture
Offering coverage from 24mm wide-angle to 105mm mid-telephoto, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM is a true walk-around lens that can be used for any number of shooting scenarios. From landscapes and portraits to snapshots and videos of breaking news, and anything else that catches the photographer’s or filmmaker’s eye, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM range is highly adaptable. You can spend less time changing lenses and more time taking pictures or recording video.
Air Sphere Coating (ASC) Helps to Significantly Reduce Flare and Ghosting
The EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM features Air Sphere Coatings (ASC) on its lens elements to help combat flare, ghosting and reflections, and deliver clean images with reduced aberrations from reflected light. Designed to significantly reduce distortions, this technology puts an ultra-low refractive layer on the lens element. This layer works with the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM’s overall optical formula to help deliver a clean image to the camera’s sensor, which can decrease the need for post-production.
Image Stabiliser Performance at up to 4 Stops of Camera Shake Compensation
For consistently sharper results, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM features an improved Image Stabiliser system that provides significantly enhanced shake reduction for up to 4 stops* of shutter speeds. This means more reliable handheld performance and clearer detail in low-light situations or at lower ISOs. Because of its enhanced stabilisation, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM can also minimise the need for a tripod.
* Based on CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association) standards. Testing performed using the EOS-1D X digital SLR camera at a focal length of 105mm. The number of stops may vary based on the camera model used.
10-Blade Rounded Aperture delivers Perfect Bokeh and Soft Backgrounds
Thanks to its 10-blade, circular aperture, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM is capable of gorgeous, evocative out-of-focus areas and soft backgrounds throughout its zoom range. By delivering an incredible level of control over background blur, it helps you define the mood of your image, creating impactful photos and videos.
Inner Focusing, Ring USM, High-Speed CPU and Optimised AF Algorithms
The EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM is engineered to provide fast, accurate operation for efficient performance across the board. It features a high-performance control CPU that drives Canon’s quick inner focusing with ring USM for quick starts and stops. Plus, it’s programmed with optimised AF algorithms that help achieve fast, accurate focus and maintain it consistently.
Fluorine Coating on Front and Rear Lens Surfaces Helps Reduce Smudges and Fingerprints
To help maintain a clean lens, even after multiple lens changes in sub-optimal conditions, the EF 24–105mm f/4L IS II USM has a specially designed non-stick fluorine coating on its front and rear surfaces. This fluorine coating helps prevent dust, water, oil and other surface residue like fingerprints from sticking to the lens, resulting in quick and easy wiping, without the use of solvents.

What a waste

Everybody told me it was so versatile and such a good choice. Of course I had to get one (I own two - don't ask)
Turned out to be a terrible choice for me.
Not really sharp enough for most of my commercial work and I never really warmed up to it.
In my opinion it is the worst piece of junk Canon ever tried to peddle as an "L" lens.
Great lens...for a new enthusiast.

Like many, I had hoped that Canon would make a replacement version for the original 24-105 for some time. Having owned and used that lens for years on lower resolution cameras, I found it to be a good general purpose event lens and really appreciated the focal range. It was not as sharp as my 24-70 2.8 II, but I really liked having the extra reach at the long end and the IS.
This lens for years now has been one of my...bring just one lens, which one, go to lens. Testing it on my 5D MkII for IS capability and overall sharpness as I will use it, mostly handheld. I was anticipating it to be a bit sharper, edge illumination to be better, and the IS to be more effective, and I'm very happy to report that on all counts I am very pleased with this new lens. I find it a worthwhile improvement on all counts, and a bonus that the lens zooms in and out smoothly for better video compared to V1. Overall it is what I was hoping for. I think it's a great value and a overall a great lens. It is an L series lens, but I won't go with Pro lens. Kind of limited in low F, and not really any bokeh,
Great Quality at Great Value

This is a good, versatile lens, covering the "medium focal range" and as such, is the best in its class, offering good overall performance at an affordable price. If I were still into wedding photography, this would be my lens of choice (but also consider the faster but less versatile 24-70 f/2.8). But, I don't do weddings anymore and now consider this to be a "walk-around" lens for travel and outings. For that, I prefer the mk 1 version of this lens, because it is substantially lighter and easier to walk around with. It is also just as good in image quality in practice (but slightly behind in theory - both lenses are very good).

This is my 'go-to' lens because of its versatility and is therefore my default lens on my camera.
Neat and handy

It's a very useful and high quality lens for even an average photographer. I use it on the 70D and it makes a huge difference on quality with sharp direct pictures.
I definitely recommend it to spend just that little bit extra. It's for sure worth it.
